Black History Month Celebration Set For Lawrence High School

"Honoring the Past, Celebrating the Present, Inspiring the Future, Rocking the Vote" is set for Feb. 29.

LAWRENCE TOWNSHIP, NJ — Lawrence High School’s Arts and Humanities Academy will celebrate Black History Month by “Honoring the Past, Celebrating the Present, Inspiring the Future, Rocking the Vote.”

The celebration will take place from 2 p.m. to 7 p.m. on Feb. 29. The event is grant funded by the Lawrence Township Education Association PRIDE. The celebration will boast an array of performances and tributes by Lawrence High School students, faculty, and special guests.

A dozen black business vendors will greet visitors to the event at 2 p.m. At 3 p.m., guests will be treated to a taste of cultural dishes, as they take a visual and musical journey through black history.

The event continues at 5 p.m. in the auditorium with the official program, which features dance, musical and choral performances by Lawrence Intermediate’s Pitch Black Ensemble, LHS Madrigal, Ensemble & Gospel Choirs, LHS Jazz Band, and featured special guests, Tiffany & Company Academy of Dance and the Renaissance Jazz Band.

Keeping with tradition of previous years, Lawrence High School will also honor local and state residents who have and are currently paving the way for future generations, with its 2020 Trailblazer Award.

This year’s Trailblazer honorees positively impacted the school, local community or surrounding communities. Those who will be recognized include Assemblywoman Verlina Reynolds-Jackson, former Lawrence Township Police Officer, Ernest Chester, Tiffany & Company Academy of Dance founder, Tiffany Hargrett, S.E.E.D. Male Mentoring Coordinator, Stacy D. Heading, Humanitarian Service advocates, The DIVAS, and 2020 Rising Star recipients, Rays of Hope. Reverend Lois Key-Alexander, Co-Pastor of the Life Abundant Church of God in Trenton will deliver the keynote address.

The celebration is free and open to all who wish to attend. Donations will be accepted.
