Holy Redeemer Seeking Compassionate Hospice Volunteers in Mercer County
Holy Redeemer HomeCare and Hospice is looking for caring individuals to support local hospice patients and their families.
Trenton, N.J. – Holy Redeemer HomeCare and Hospice is seeking compassionate and emotionally mature volunteers to provide support to Mercer County hospice patients and their families. A three-session training program for potential hospice volunteers will be held May 12, 19, and 26.
“Helping can come in many forms, from holding a hand to getting groceries,” said Spiro Ballas, Holy Redeemer Hospice’s Volunteer Coordinator for Mercer County. “Mostly what is needed is for volunteers to listen with an open heart, creating space where the patient or patient’s family member can express what they need to at this special time.”

Those interested in volunteering will take three day-long training sessions, covering medical, psychological and spiritual aspects of hospice volunteering, all aimed at preparing the volunteer to serve with confidence.
“It takes a very special, compassionate person to become a hospice volunteer,” said Ballas. “Part of their role is to reflect Holy Redeemer’s underlying mission to care, comfort and heal by working with the professional hospice team to provide companionship and support for patients as well as their families.”

“Many of our volunteers tell me that they feel personally and spiritually rewarded as a result of the interactions they have and the relationships they develop,” said Ballas. “Our volunteers truly make a difference in the lives of patients and families, and often the reverse is true, as well.”
What do hospice volunteers do?
Hospice patient care volunteers typically visit with patients in their homes or nursing facilities one to four times a month for two to three hours. They provide emotional support and companionship to patients and family members, assist with errands, or provide respite for caregivers. Bereavement volunteers support the families of hospice patients following the loss of a loved one. Administrative volunteers assist with typing, mailings, filing and other office necessities.
