LAWRENCE TOWNSHIP, NJ — The Lawrence Township Public School District has been recognized for its character by a national organization. It is one of seven districts designated as a State School of Character by Character.org, the district announced on Tuesday.

“I’m thrilled and so proud of our district for being named a State School of Character,” Lawrence Superintendent of Schools Ross Kasun said. “Although our character education initiative is not about winning awards, it’s wonderful to see our dedicated efforts recognized by this prestigious organization, with a goal of benefiting society not only through academics but also by addressing social, emotional, and ethical issues.

Character.org, a national advocate and leader for character in schools, families, sports teams, and the workplace recently designated 81 schools and 7 districts nationwide as State Schools of Character for 2020.

The district was first named a New Jersey School of Character in 2014 by the then New Jersey Alliance for Social, Emotional and Character Development. It held that distinction for five years.

For the reapplication, a team of administrators and staff worked together to address each of the 11 Principles of Effective Character Education using the 2014 application and current character education practices.

The district will now be considered for National District of Character status, which will be announced in May. Lawrence was a National District of Character from 2014-2019.
