Lawrence High School Students Win National History Awards

LAWRENCE TOWNSHIP, NJ — Three Lawrence Township High School students won awards during the National History Day finals on Saturday, the school district announced on Wednesday.

Sophomore Jack Granahan received the National Archives' "U.S. Constitution Award" for his individual performance as "Justice Louis Brandeis: Breaking Economic, Religious, and Political Barriers."

Sponsored by the National Archives and Records Administration, the "U.S. Constitution Award" is awarded to an outstanding entry that uses the records of the Federal government to either illuminate the creation and ratification of the U.S. Constitution or to focus on Constitutional issues throughout American History.

Juniors Amritha Sypereddi and Dessy Dusichka received the Best of State Award for their group website, "Dr. Alice Hamilton: Breaking Barriers in Workplace Safety." Sypereddi and Dusichka's website ranked 7th in the world placing in the top ten out of 100 Senior Division group website entries. This was the second year in a row that Sypereddi and Dusichka's projects were honored as Best of State.

Sypereddi and Dusichka serve as co-presidents of the LHS NHD Club. All LMS and LHS NHD Club members are to be commended for persevering through virtual competitions this past year. Students began working on their projects last September up through the June contest.

This year's National History Day theme was "Breaking Barriers." Next year's theme is "Communication in History: The Key to Understanding." Priscilla Taylor is the Lawrence Township Public Schools National History Day Club advisor.
