Lawrence Lightning 95lb Squad Defeats Northern Burlington

Jalen Corbin set the tone on Saturday morning when he returned the opening kickoff 65 yards for a touchdown as the Lawrence Lightning 95lb team beat the Greyhounds of Northern Burlington 13-8.  The Lightning 95's then turned up their stifling defense shutting out the Greyhounds until the 4th quarter.  Tackles Jalen Birks and Kyle Sheehy along with nose tackle Deisel Barnes jammed up the middle all morning and defensive ends Hank Bigelow and Careem Frost closed down the edges.  Tailback Trae Jones lined up behind center with under a minute to go in the 2nd quarter and took the ball 58 yards for the Lightning’s next score.

At the start of the 4th quarter the Greyhounds defense took advantage of bad field position and scored a safety.  Just under the four minute mark, Northern Burlington then took a botched punt into the endzone to close the lead to 13-8.  As they were driving on their final possession, the Greyhounds quarterback threw a pass to his tight end that was intercepted by linebacker James Kildea, who downed the ball to end the game.

Solid running in the 2nd half was not enough to make up the deficit as the 110lb team lost to Northern Burlington 25-14.  Special teams errors kept the dynamic running duo of Bryon Hearst and Cory Frost off of the field for much of the 1st half.  Each of them scored a touch down in the 2nd half.
