Lawrence Opens Cooling Stations Ahead Of Extreme Heat Warning Wednesday

LAWRENCEVILLE, NJ — An extreme heat warning has been issued for Lawrence Township until 8 p.m. Wednesday, with dangerously high temperatures and heat index values expected to increase the risk of heat-related illness, according to township officials.

"Residents are encouraged to limit outdoor activities during the hottest part of the day, stay hydrated, wear lightweight clothing, and check on older adults, young children, and neighbors who may be more vulnerable to the heat," officials said.

The township has opened cooling stations for residents who lack access to air conditioning or need relief from the heat:

• The Lawrence Township Senior Center is open from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. on weekdays.

• The Lawrence Township Police Department lobby is open 24 hours a day for the duration of the heat wave.

• The Mercer County Library is available during its regular operating hours.

Officials noted that cooling stations are intended to provide temporary relief from the heat and are not shelters or locations offering food or entertainment.

Residents experiencing signs of heat exhaustion or heat stroke should move to a cool place immediately and seek medical attention. Officials said to call 911 if someone becomes unconscious, confused, or stops sweating during extreme heat.
