Lawrence Township School District Recognized For Solar Panel Use

The district received the 2017 Sustainability Makes $ense Award.

LAWRENCE TOWNSHIP, NJ — The Lawrence Township Public School District has received another prestigious honor from Sustainable Jersey for Schools. It earned the 2017 Sustainability Makes $ense Award in recognition of its commitment to implementing Sustainable Jersey for Schools actions while recognizing substantial savings for the district, the district announced on Monday.

The announcement comes on the heels of the announcement that the district’s seven schools all achieved Bronze Certification from the organization. All the schools and the district will be honored during the New Jersey School Boards Association (NJSBA) Workshop in Atlantic City on Oct. 24, 5 p.m.-7 p.m.

The district’s most recent recognition was for its solar panel initiative. The roofs of the district’s seven schools are maxed out with solar panels. The initiative began with a 2008 referendum approved by Lawrence voters.

“The solar panels have generated over $3 million of revenue to date,” the district said in an announcement. “That combined with the amount of energy usage offset by the panels brings total savings to over $4 million. Savings go to Lawrence residents in the form of tax relief.”
