Mercer Co. Man Charged With Murder In Fatal February Stabbing

MERCER COUNTY, NJ — A Trenton man was arrested and charged for a fatal stabbing, that occurred on Whittaker Avenue in Trenton February, Mercer County Prosecutor Angelo J. Onofri said Friday.

Luis Bonilla, 20, is charged with murder, possession of a weapon for an unlawful purpose and unlawful possession of a weapon. He was taken into custody on March 8, Onofri said.

The prosecutor’s office has filed a motion to detain Bonilla pending trial.

After 5 p.m. on Feb. 23, Trenton police responded to the 500 block of Whittaker Avenue for a report of a male stabbed. The victim, later identified as Leonardo Fernandez, 32, of Trenton, was found at the scene with multiple stab wounds to the torso, authorities said. He was taken to Capital Health Regional Medical Center where he was pronounced dead.

The investigation was conducted by the Mercer County Homicide Task Force and the Trenton Police Department.
