Mercer County Man Convicted Of Gun Charge In September Incident
Police said they saw him discard an object and later learned it was a 9 mm handgun.

A Mercer County man has been convicted of a second-degree gun charge stemming from an incident that happened in September, Mercer County Prosecutor Angelo J. Onofri announced.
Rakim Williams, 29, of Trenton, was found guilty of a single count of second-degree certain persons not to have weapons on June 12 following a four-day trial.
Trenton police officers said they saw Williams take an object out of his waistband and throw it on the ground at the corner of East State Street and Olden Avenue on Sept. 15, 2017.

When one of the officers approached Williams, he ran away. Williams was taken into custody following a brief chase, police said. They determined that the object he dropped was a 9 mm handgun.
Sentencing is scheduled for July 27. Williams is eligible for a discretionary extended term with a potential maximum sentence of 20 years with a 10-year period of parole ineligibility.

If the extended term is denied, Williams faces 5-10 years in state prison with a minimum five-year period of parole ineligibility.
