Mike Powers Will Not Seek Reelection To Lawrence Council In 2023

Powers and Cathleen Lewis will not be seeking reelection in 2023, leaving two council seats vacant in Lawrence Township.

LAWRENCEVILLE, NJ – Councilman Mike Powers announced Tuesday that 2023 will be his last year on the Lawrence Township Council.

The former mayor’s council term expires in 2023.

“With the upcoming departure of Cathleen Lewis from the Council, I have been approached by a number of qualified Democrats interested in serving on the Lawrence Township Council,” Powers said in a statement.

“I want these folks to know early on that there will be at least two opportunities to run for Council in the November 2023 Election.”

Powers was first elected to the Council in 2003 and has served two terms as Lawrence Mayor - in 2006 and 2010. In 1997 he was appointment to the Lawrence Planning Board and served a three year stint as the Chair of the Lawrence Township Redevelopment Committee.

Although he received the endorsement of the Lawrence Democratic Municipal Committee, Powers was unsuccessful in his countywide run for the Mercer County Democratic Party Commissioner nomination in 2019 and 2021.

Powers currently serves as the Council liaison to the Historic Preservation Committee and the Shade Tree Advisory Committee.

Powers said that he and his wife Nancy will continue residing in Lawrence Township and have no plans to move out.
