Rider Suspends Travel, Extends Spring Break Amid Coronavirus Fear

Classes and athletic events at Rider are continuing as scheduled.

LAWRENCEVILLE, NJ — Rider University is extending its spring break by one week and suspending university-sponsored air travel amid concerns of an outbreak of new coronavirus, the university announced. Spring break will now run through March 27.

“Students and faculty traveling during spring break to any country with a CDC Level 3 travel health warning should contact their academic dean this week,” the university said on its website. “Staff should contact their supervisors.”

Classes will continue to be held as currently scheduled, and there have been no confirmed cases of the virus among students, faculty or staff on either of the university’s campuses, according to the university’s website.

It plans to continue instruction for as long as possible, while also preparing for the need to cancel in-person classes and move classes online. None of the university’s events, including athletic events, have been canceled.

On Tuesday, Princeton University reported that two of their staffers may have been exposed to coronavirus, and two people infected with coronavirus attended a private party in Princeton.

Princeton University said it will begin virtual instruction after spring break and will also cut back on the number of gatherings on campus because of the growing concerns about the new coronavirus. The Ivy League has canceled both its men’s and women’s basketball tournaments that had been scheduled for this weekend.

The New Jersey Department of Health has partnered with the New Jersey Poison Information and Education System to open and operate a call center (1-800-222-1222) for public use regarding questions, concerns, and other information related to coronavirus spread in New Jersey.
