The Introspective Artist, a look at the abstract paintings of Trenton-based painter and muralist Ricardo Basilio Coke

Panamanian painter and muralist, Ricardo Basilio Coke began drawing and painting over 20 years ago with his artist father as his first teacher and mentor. He later went on to study under Quentin 'Kwenci" Jones of Black Bull Art, where he was introduced to murals. His first work as a muralist appeared in the "Trenton Murals Project" (1994-95), and current works show his versatility both as an introspective man and humanist. These include "Moments of Humanity" at the Center for Latino Arts and Culture, on Rutgers Campus, New Brunswick, and "Waters of Antiquity", commissioned by Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital. The latter is the welcoming pictorial you see at the newly designed and renovated Boyd Park, as you enter the City of New Brunswick.

Coke has taught art at Trenton Community Charter School, Boys and Girls Club of Mercer County, Imani Community Center and Trenton After-School Program; as a teaching artist he has worked with Rutgers University CARTS, a program sponsored by Transcultural New Jersey, Institute for the Arts and Humanities.

A renaissance man indeed, Coke is a classically trained musician, a performance poet and a proficient trumpet player, having studied performance at William Paterson University. His most recent music projects include the Judy Black Band Album "What Have We Become", which he co-produced and performed on as well.
