At 103 Years Young, Little Egg Harbor Resident Maryanne Rauth Recalls Nation’s Defining Moments

As America approaches its 250th anniversary, few people can offer a perspective as unique as Maryanne “Mame” Rauth. The centenarian, who resides at The Terraces at Seacrest Village in Little Egg Harbor and recently celebrated her milestone 103rd birthday, has lived through some of the most defining events in modern American history – from global wars and the moon landing to decades of social and technological transformation.

Rauth grew up in Trenton alongside four sisters and two brothers. She recalls being inspired in 1932 by Amelia Earhart’s historic solo flight across the Atlantic Ocean, describing it as a moment that reinforced her admiration for independence and perseverance. She also speaks vividly of the day she learned about the attack on Pearl Harbor on the radio, recollecting the shock of the moment and the deep sadness it brought.

During World War II, Rauth remembers a nation united in purpose, as Americans across the country contributed to the war effort. She was among the many women of her generation who worked on a factory assembly line producing weapon materials for the military. She cites President Franklin D. Roosevelt as a personal favorite for his leadership during both the Great Depression and the war years.

She also recalls watching the 1969 moon landing as a surreal moment in history, citing it as something that once seemed possible only in science fiction movies.

In the postwar period, Rauth built a life with her late husband Conrad, beginning with their meeting at a dance. Eventually, the couple grew their own printing business, purchased a home, and raised three children together while pursuing what she describes as the “American Dream.”

Reflecting on her life as the nation celebrates its semiquincentennial, Rauth shared, “I have seen so many historic moments in my lifetime, and I have always felt grateful to have built a meaningful life in this country. It is something I never take for granted.”

Rauth moved to The Terraces at Seacrest Village in March 2025 and continues living life to the fullest.
