8th Annual Long Branch Walk to Defeat ALS

On Sunday, May 19th hundreds gathered for the 8th annual Long Branch Walk to Defeat ALS, hosted by the ALS Association Greater New York Chapter.  Over 70 teams raised money and awareness to find a cure for Lou Gehrig’s Disease and help those patients and their families currently battling the illness.

A local team from Little Silver -- Maggio's Warriors for Defeat -- raised over $3,000 for ALS research and patient care services.  The team was captained by Amy Groeling and they walked in memory of Tom Maggio, who lost his battle with ALS three years ago.

U.S. Congressman Frank Pallone was among the event's attendees.

Approximately 30,000 Americans are currently living with ALS, with 5,600 new diagnoses each year.  Upon diagnosis, the average life expectancy is just 2-5 years.

Proceeds from the Walk benefit The ALS Association Greater New York Chapter.  As one of The ALS Association's leading chapters, the Greater New York Chapter covers Northern & Central New Jersey, New York City, Long Island, Westchester County, and the Hudson Valley, and plays a major role in promoting the mission to lead the fight to cure and treat ALS.
