The Community YMCA's Family Health & Wellness Center in Red Bank is offering the YMCA's national LIVESTRONG program for cancer survivors including anyone who has had surgery, chemo or radiation related to cancer. LIVESTRONG at the YMCA is a physical activity and well-being program designed to help adult cancer survivors reclaim their total health. The new session begins Monday, April 15, 2013, and is open to the community.
LIVESTRONG at the YMCA is a free twelve-week, small group exercise program designed for cancer survivors 18 years and older wanting to regain their health as they have become de-conditioned and fatigued from treatment. Program participants must receive medical clearance to participate.
Cancer is a life-changing disease that takes a tremendous physical and emotional toll on those affected. Through LIVESTRONG at the YMCA, participants work with Y staff trained in supportive cancer care to safely achieve their goals such as building muscle mass and strength, increasing flexibility and endurance, and improving confidence and self-esteem.

Participants meet for a variety of classes including strength training, yoga, swimming and consultations with a nutritionist. Baselines are taken at the beginning and end of each session to determine the increase in strength and ability as a result of the program. There are specific qualifications and medical consent is required to participate in the program. The program is designed for small groups and is available on a first-come, first-serve basis.
One of the program participants, a resident of Tinton Falls, says this about the program: "LIVESTRONG at the Y has given me the opportunity and the means to focus on my wellness, instead of my illness. After finishing treatment, your energy level is not the same so it's difficult to go back to your regular routine. This program is helping me gain my strength back."
