New Spring Programs Being Offered at The Community YMCA

The Community YMCA Family Health and Wellness Center, 166 Maple Avenue in Red Bank, is starting spring registration for classes beginning February 11 for members and February 18 for the community. Several new classes for kids are being offered for the first spring session running from March 4 – April 28, 2013.

In addition to the Y’s popular aquatics program, parents can register their children for new classes such as Street Beats for Kids, Young Explorers, Spanish Club, Service Learning Club, and Teen Leadership classes such as Y Leaders Club, Girls Circle and Y Teen Achievers.

“Sound health means being physically active as well as learning how to relax, trying new things and spending time with your family and friends,” said Red Bank Family Health and Wellness Center Executive Director Linda Ambis.  “The Y is a community that provides all this and more. The Y encourages healthy living with a variety of activities from family dinners, movie nights and active older adults events, to community volunteering.”

New and returning classes are as follows:

• For kids ages 3-5, the Y’s new class is Street Beats, a fun, entertaining beginner music class that introduces young musicians to drums, keyboarding and basic understanding of music.   Returning classes are Picasso Preschoolers, where young artists can create masterpieces while learning about color, texture, collage and drawing, and Jr. Lab Rats, an entertaining hands-on science program.
• Also for kids ages 3-5 is Young Explorers, an exciting program packed with outer space fun!  This art and literacy based program will ignite the imagination of kids as they learn and discover through hands-on activities.
• For 4-8 year olds, the Y’s Spanish Club offers an introduction to conversational Spanish through hands-on and group activities.
• For 12-16 year olds the Y is introducing the Service Learning Club, which provides teaching and learning that combine community service with instruction and self-assessment to enhance the learning experience, teach responsibility and importance of volunteerism.
• Teen leadership programs includes Y Leaders Club for youth and teens in grades 6-9, which provides them with knowledge, training, communication skills and valuable team-building skills through volunteering in YMCA programs and the Community; Girls Circle also for grades 6-9, which encourages the development of strength, courage, confidence, honesty and communication skills for girls; and Y Teen Achievers for teens in grades 9-12, which is an extracurricular educational and teen mentoring program.

Along with registration for classes, the Y is also enrolling children for their Summer Specialty Camps and Summer Fun Camp.

As a nonprofit charity, the Y provides financial assistance for programs and services on a needs-based sliding scale.
