Bee Swarm

Honeybees captured during drenching rainstorm!

I captured my first swarm of honeybees on Friday.

Yes, during the worst of that drenching rain I got a call from my "beebuddy" that her neighbor had a swarm in her yard.

I couldn't believe that the honeybees would swarm during that rainstorm, but it turns out they had started the process the day before.

When I arrived the poor things were clinging to the branch of an evergreen tree about three feet off the ground and they were soaking wet.

I grabbed my mini beehive box and set it on the ground under the swarm.  I carefully cut the branch off and placed the swarm right inside the box, put the lid on and I was done.

Honeybees are not defensive when swarming like this, they are really just interested in finding a new place to live.

The fact that it was raining kept them huddled together and made it really easy for me to capture all of them.

I brought the captured swarm back to my beebuddy's house this morning and now she has that second hive she has always wanted.

If you want to see swarms being captured you can find lots of them on Youtube, just type in something like "honeybee swarm" and you will see lots swarms being captured.
