At Sickles Market, One Harrison, Avenue, Little Silver, there’s always something new to discover. It’s like a sensory theater where through taste, see, smell, touch and hear we learn more about food, gardening and living a good life. This weekend two free tastings July 13 & 14 from 11-2 will explore two regions known for exquisite foods, Vermont & France.
On Saturday, July 13, 2013, a cheese demonstrations will take you on a little trip to Vermont. Sickles Market will have a free tasting of two award-winning Vermont cheeses: Thistle Hill Farm Tarentaise and Vermont Butter and Cheese products. These same two cheesemakers are also on the itinerary for a Fall get-away to Woodstock, Vermont, September 22-25. The small, exclusive group of travelers on Sickles “On the Road Tour” will be treated to a personal tour to Vermont Butter and Cheese Creamery by co-owner Allison Hooper, who will also accompany the group to her new dairy goat farm and then she will host a dinner at her home. That’s about as authentic farm-to-table dinner as you can get. Thistle Hill Farm is also on the agenda and owners John and Janine Putnam will lead tour goers through their pristine, hillside organic dairy cow farm. Their doe-eyed bovines, Jersey girls, are among the most prized for the quality of butterfat in their milk. And this is what is now known as “good fat.” Grass fed cows (and goats) produce milk that is richer in Vitamin A & D and contain more omega-3 fats that are all essential to good health. Tour director Kirsty Dougherty will be on hand to answer any questions you might have about the tour.

On Sunday, July 14, the free demonstration will explore France in honor of Bastille Day, the French national holiday which celebrates the storming of Bastille, a fortress prison on July 14, 1789 and the beginning of the French Revolution. The tasting led by Cheri Scolari, Sickles Market’s culinary marketing specialist will sample the classic French cheese - Frommage de Meaux, a Brie-style cheese that is much deeper in flavor than mass produced Brie cheeses; French butter – Celles sur Belle – and French bread flown in weekly from Paris – Poliâne. These three classic French foods are known for their purity of ingrdients and excellent flavor and texture. Tour Director Kirsty Dougherty just returned from an international Sickles On the Road Tour to Paris and Provence. Her small, exclusive group toured the 80-year-old bakery known for its exquisite, authentic sourdough breads.
