If you or a loved one have multiple sclerosis (MS), it’s important that you find out as much as you can about this disease and how it can best be treated. One of the treatments at your disposal is chiropractic care. Although there’s no evidence that chiropractic medicine can cure MS, many patients find that it relieves pain and reduces symptoms related to multiple sclerosis.
What is MS?
Multiple Sclerosis is a chronic disease that attacks the central nervous system. The symptoms associated with this disease can range from mild (numbness in the extremities) to very severe (paralysis or blindness). The severity and symptoms associated with MS are extremely unpredictable and can vary from patient to patient.

Those with MS find that the disease follows one of four courses, and each of them can vary in severity.
Relapsing-Remitting Multiple Sclerosis.
Those who have this type typically experience attacks that are clearly defined signs of worsening neurological function. These attacks, which are often referred to as flare ups, are followed by remissions during which there is no disease progression. It’s estimated that 85 percent of MS patients are initially diagnosed with this type.

Primary-Progressive Multiple Sclerosis.
About 10 percent of MS sufferers are diagnosed with this type, which is characterized by a slow decrease in neurological function from the beginning. Patients with this type of MS have no distinct remissions.
Secondary-Progressive Multiple Sclerosis.
Following an initial period of experiencing Relapsing-Remitting Multiple Sclerosis, some will develop this course, wherein the disease worsens steadily.
Progressive-Relapsing Multiple Sclerosis.
This is the rarest type of MS, and affects only five percent of patients. Those who experience this course will have steadily worsening symptoms accompanied with severe attacks of neurologic function along the way. There are no remissions with this course of MS.
As early as the 1930s, B.J. Palmer was using upper cervical manipulation to treat MS patients. There are many MS sufferers (including television host, Montel Williams) who insist that chiropractic care has helped relieve the symptoms related to their disease. In fact, Montel said “it was the most amazing thing that ever happened to me.” You can watch him talk about his chiropractic experience on YouTube.
