Community Corner

Registration Open for YMCA's Learn to Swim Week, June 24-28

As part of their ongoing commitment to water safety, The Community YMCA is pleased to offer Learn to Swim Week, a national YMCA initiative for first-time swimmers in the community.  Aimed at participants with little or no swimming experience, this 5-day program introduces them to the aquatic environment, teaches basic learn-to-swim skills, and increases water awareness for the participants and their families. With the summer fast approaching, the Y is committed to helping children, families and all residents feel safe in and around water.

“We are pleased to offer this outreach program to the community and keep it affordable for all participants,” said The Community YMCA President and CEO Rhonda Anderson.  “Learn to Swim Week reflects the Y’s commitment to social responsibility by giving our neighbors basic swimming skills and teaching them how to be safe in and around water.”

Since 2008, Learn to Swim Week has helped nearly 1,000 participants develop basic water safety skills.  Last year was the first year the program was open to all ages, children to adults.

“We’re happy that we can provide such a great community outreach water safety program for all ages,” said Rebecca Rivera, aquatics director at the Y’s Family Health & Wellness Center. “We also encourage area parents to make sure that their children’s caretakers know water safety and how to swim.”

Classes are offered from ages 6 months to adult, during the week of June 24-28 at the Y’s Family Health and Wellness Center, 166 Maple Ave., Red Bank.
