Kids on the Ball as Little Silver Introduces Pick-Up Soccer at Sickles Park
Little Silver Recreation had great success as it began co-ed pick up soccer matches on Wednesday evenings for kids in grades 6-8
On the heels of the popular pick up adult soccer games in Little Silver, the recreation department has introduced the same program for boys and girls in sixth through eighth grades. The program began on June 29 with approximately 16 boys and girls showing up to play. Within a few minutes the teams were drawn, the pinnies distributed and the game began. Players changed teams, play continued out of bounds and nobody kept score; the perfect way to enjoy playing for the simple love of the game.
“After a successful start of our adult pick up soccer in Little Silver, we wanted to bring the same to the kids in town and allow boys and girls of all skill levels to enjoy the free form of pick up soccer. The goal is to encourage the kids to take charge of the program with limited adult interaction and learn to enjoy the game with no other agenda than to play for the love of soccer” said AJ McNally, Little Silver Recreation Soccer Coordinator.
After a long day at camp for several of the kids, they still found the energy to play a great pickup game of soccer for 90 minutes. Andrew Freeman of Fair Haven came by to lend a hand to McNally and both men were given a workout in the goal. “It was just fun” said Ryan Brewer, 12. “I liked playing with friends that I don’t normally play soccer with. I definitely want to come back next week.”
