Avery Garr of Aberdeen was presented with the prestigious Energizing Young Voters (EYV) / Schmiedel Family Foundation Founders Award for Outstanding Leadership in Civic Engagement at The League of Women Voters of Monmouth County Annual Meeting on June 15, 2026. The unique, one-time award includes a $2,000 prize and a complimentary membership to the local, state, and national League of Women Voters.

The Communications High School student was recognized for her exceptional leadership in organizing and executing a comprehensive Voting Simulation program for her peers. The simulation reduces first-time voter anxiety, removes other perceived barriers to voting, and provides hands-on experience to build confidence ahead of real elections. The special Founders Award was created specifically for Garr, honoring her extraordinary impact before she reached the age eligibility threshold for the standard program scholarships.

"Avery’s work reflects the very best of the League’s mission and the mission of Energizing Young Voters," said Patricia Supplee, Director of EYV. "By bringing this voting simulation to life, she gave her peers a hands-on experience that answers their questions and generates excitement about becoming lifelong voters. This scholarship model doesn’t just reward leadership—it grows it."

Avery states of her motivation for her project, “The first time I knew I had a passion for civic engagement was when I attended my first protest in seventh grade, following the overturn of Roe v. Wade. Being in a space where so many people came together to work towards a common goal fueled my passion for protecting our democracy. Having the ability to spread my passion to my peers with the help of the League of Women Voters was an incredible opportunity.”

Energizing Young Voters began as a local Monmouth County LWV grassroots initiative based on the historical lesson "The Timeline of Suffrage." It expanded into a statewide initiative under the League of Women Voters of New Jersey and has since been used nationwide. EYV now provides civic education, youth voter registration, and student civic leadership opportunities.
