Ospreys Make a Home in Oceanport

Ospreys apparently have never heard that in real eastate, it's all about "location, location, location," because the birds have recently built a nest on top of Oceanport's emergency alert siren in Blackberry Bay Park.

The protected species is also playing house in a nest discovered Monday atop a telephone pole in front of borough hall on Myrtle Avenue, according to Borough Administrator Kimberly A. Jungfer.

Jungfer said the borough will turn off the siren until the end of breeding season in September. In the meantime, officials are working with New Jersey Dept. of Fish and Wildlife to get specs to relocate the osprey nest.

"It's not the best place for them to be nesting," she said.

Jungfer said the borough would contact local Eagle Scouts in hopes that one would like to take on the relocation as a project and build a permanent osprey nest.

The Blackberry nest was reported last week, she told Patch, and a resident came into borough hall on Monday to point out the Myrtle Avenue nest.
