Pilgrim Boys Wore Dresses and Other Mysteries Revealed

Wolf Hill third graders celebrate the first settlers of the new world.

The third grade classes performed the story of the first Thanksgiving, sang two verses of My Country 'tis of Thee (we didn't know there was a second verse, turns out there are four) and delighted their parents with fun facts about the first settlers.

Here's a sampling:

  • In pilgrim homes there was only one stool and that was for Dad.
  • Children were not allowed to speak unless spoken too.
  • Both boys and girls wore dresses until they were about six years old.
  • The water on the Mayflower was so bad that the children had to drink beer.

We didn't fact check these so you'll have to take a third grader's word for it.

After their stage appearance, the performers were treated to a feast, courtesy of their room parents. Each pilgrim and Native American ate on a wooden plate with a wooden spoon to keep it authentic.
