Interested in the environment, recycling or the issue of
sustainability? On Sunday, November 3, 2013 at 11:15 am, Congregation B’nai
Israel (CBI) will host the first of a five-part learning series called Plant,
Learn, Grow. The first
event will include a 20 minute film entitled “The Story of Stuff” followed by a
workshop and thought-provoking discussion about resources, garbage and the
Jewish principle of “bal tashcit,” which teaches one not to waste or commit
needless destruction of the environment.
Free and open to all students in grades 8 through 12, the 2 hour program
includes bagels, coffee and juice.
“We
are so fortunate to have received a grant from Hazon, a Jewish international
organization devoted to environmental education and advocacy, to fund this
learning series,” explains Susan Alderson, Youth Director at CBI. “We hope to inspire all students in our
area to understand more about where our food comes from, environmental
sustainability and the challenge of living healthily.”

The learning series will continue on December 15, 2013. “The event on December 15 will be geared towards students in middle school, grades 5 through 7, on a similar theme, ” said Alderson. “Other programs will follow, concluding in March with a family program,” said Alderson. “All of the events will engage the attendees in a conversation about how we, as people, are connected to our natural world. We will ask the question how do Jewish teachings relate to the complex choices involved in how we manage our resources, food and contemporary lives?”
