Do you make it a point to buy gifts from local stores or purchase handmade items?
I try to shop small especially around the holidays because I know how important it is to local merchants. And I like the stories that come along with the locally produced things I hand pick for my family and friends.
In the past, I've purchased salt cod at Ferrucci's II Gourmet Foods in Little Silver for my Italian grandmother, picked out a namesake t-shirt and CDs from Jack's Music Shoppe in Red Bank for my brother in Richmond, and assembled a sushi-making kit for my kids with the assistance of the shopkeeper at Hop Shing Oriental Grocery in Matawan.
