Here’s what happened, LFD Chief Christopher Mullin said:

“At approximately 4:15 p.m., a stalled elevator was reported at RWJ Barnabas-East Wing Building with four occupants trapped inside the elevator car. Members of the Livingston Fire Department responded and removed the trapped occupants through the emergency escape hatch located in the ceiling of the elevator car. [Firefighters] opened the exterior doors to access the elevator shaft and the top of the car inside. A collapsible ladder was lowered through the emergency hatch and a firefighter climbed into the car to assist the occupants up the ladder to awaiting firefighters who assisted the occupants to safety.”

The elevator has been taken out of service until repairs can be made, Mullin noted.
