Major Road Work Will Start In Livingston This Week: What Drivers, Residents Should Know

LIVINGSTON, NJ — A major road construction project is about to kick off in Livingston.

The West Northfield Road culvert replacement project is scheduled to begin this week and continue for several months.

Work will include replacing the existing culvert over Slough Brook, along with roadway reconstruction, new curbs and sidewalks, driveway improvements, and milling/resurfacing of the roadway.

Here's what it will mean for local drivers, Livingston town officials said:

"Motorists should expect temporary traffic changes, lane closures, and shifted traffic patterns in the area of West Northfield Road, particularly near Slough Brook and Arbor Court, as construction progresses. The approved traffic control plan calls for traffic to be shifted around the work area, with one lane of travel maintained in each direction during portions of the project. Drivers should follow all posted signs and directions from traffic control personnel and allow additional time when traveling through the area."

Township officials noted that a full closure of the culvert/bridge area will also be required during portions of the project.

When a closure is in effect, motorists should follow posted detour signs and seek alternate routes. The traffic control plans include a designated detour plan for periods when the roadway is closed.

"Residents in the immediate area should also be aware of construction activity during the contractor's standard working hours of 7 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Access to residential driveways within the work area is required to be maintained throughout construction, although residents may experience temporary changes or restrictions as work progresses."

The project is expected to continue through approximately spring 2027. The exact timeline is dependent on weather.

The work is being undertaken by Essex County with funding from a Local Aid Grant from the New Jersey Department of Transportation.
