It is estimated that one in eight women will develop breast cancer at some point during their lifetime, and there are currently four million breast cancer survivors in the United States. Breast cancer can cause different signs and symptoms, and some people may not have any symptoms at all. Getting screened can help detect breast cancer early on before symptoms appear, thus allowing for early treatment. Women aged 40 and older should discuss mammograms with their health care provider including when to start screening and how often.

Anyone with concerning symptoms should see a health care provider to be checked. Common symptoms of breast cancer include finding a lump in the breast or under arm, dimpling, breast pain, nipple discharge, redness, and changes in shape or size.

Breast cancer is most often detected in women aged 50 and older, although younger women and men can be diagnosed. While some risk factors for breast cancer cannot be controlled, certain lifestyle changes may help lower your risk, including: maintaining a healthy body weight, being physically active, consuming the recommended amount of fruits and vegetables, and consuming alcohol in moderation.

For more information on breast cancer, visit the Livingston Health Department's education table on breast cancer at Livingston Town Hall, 357 S. Livingston Avenue, during the month of October. You may also visit komen.org or cancer.org for more information.
