EATONTOWN, NJ — Last Tuesday afternoon, April 14, Eatontown firefighters had to pry open a storm drain to free a dog that had become trapped inside.

The dog's owners were at work and it was his dog walker who called 911 to report the pooch had become stuck in a sewer on Samantha Way.

The dog's walker said the animal had been running around a fenced-in detention basin and he decided to start exploring the drainage pipes, said the Eatontown fire chief.

He crawled inside the drainage pipe. For some reason, the dog walker did not stop him and the dog ended up about 100 yards away from when he first crawled inside.

The dog walker called 911. The sewer where he was stuck was about two feet deep and there was no water inside, said the fire chief.

Firefighters, with assistance from one of the town's DPW trucks, pried open the sewer grate and used a crane on the service truck to rescue the dog. The dog was returned to his owners.
