LONG BRANCH, NJ — This week, Long Branch Mayor John Pallone announced an agreement with Brookdale Community College to acquire Brookdale's property on Lower Broadway.
The city of Long Branch purchased that building for $3.5 million and plans to turn it into the new home for the Long Branch Police Department and municipal court.
The building will be renamed the city's new public safety building, and the Monmouth County Sheriff will also maintain an office there.
“During Superstorm Sandy, our police department was severely impacted by flooding," said Long Branch Public Safety Director Charles Shirley.
Since that storm, the municipal court has been located in rented space at the Garfield Grant Building at the corner of Broadway and 5th Avenue. The city says it is eager to stop paying that rent, approximately $130,000 per year. The Brookdale building is also centrally located near City Hall and the Fire Department.
However, Brookdale Community College will still maintain a presence in Long Branch: The college will relocate its classes and adult education to the second floor of the city’s new Health and Technology Center (the former Ronald McDonald House, at the corner of Bath and Third avenues), which is expected to be completed later this year.
