TINTON FALLS, NJ — RWJBarnabas' new cancer center in Tinton Falls is scheduled to open in February 2027.
It's called the Specialty and Cancer Care Center and it's part of Monmouth Medical Center, which is in the process of leaving its longtime home in Long Branch and relocating to Tinton Falls.
The hospital and the cancer center will be located side by side on a brand-new 36-acre medical campus RWJBarnabas is building in Tinton Falls. The cancer center will be located on Pearl Harbor Avenue at Corregidor Road, and will be visible from the Garden State Parkway.
This is former Fort Monmouth property RJWBarnabas purchased from the state years ago.
It will be called the Vogel Medical Campus, named for Sheldon Vogel, a Colts Neck resident in his late 90s and former CFO of Atlantic Records. Vogel is a major Monmouth County philanthropist; he and his late wife donated tens of millions to Monmouth County hospitals and the Monmouth County SPCA. (The Vogel at the Count Basie theater in Red Bank is named after them.)
Monmouth Medical Center will open a new 252-bed hospital there, but it will not open until 2032.
RJWBarnabas decided to build the cancer center first; construction started on the cancer center three years ago.
Cancer centers are a big and growing business in New Jersey, as hospitals build and open them in suburban areas.
Memorial Sloan Kettering was the first to open a freestanding cancer center in Monmouth County, similarly located right off the Parkway on the Holmdel/Middletown border.
RWJBarnabas then decided to invest big money into cancer detection and treatment in New Jersey:
In the past decade, RWJBarnabas has spent $1.5 billion opening three major freestanding cancer centers across the state: The Jack & Sheryl Morris Cancer Center opened in New Brunswick in 2025, followed by the Melchiorre Cancer Center at Cooperman Barnabas Medical Center in Livingston, which opened in 2026. RWJBarnabas said that will be its "northern hub" for cancer care.
And now, the Tinton Falls cancer center will be RWJBarnabas' third cancer center to open.
It will be five stories tall and offer chemotherapy and radiation, same-day surgery and advanced imaging (CT scans, PET scans, MRIs). They will also do clinical trials there. It will provide cancer treatment in partnership with Rutgers Cancer Institute, also owned by RWJBarnabas. Pallone fought Monmouth Medical Center leaving Long Branch
This is part of RWJBarnabas' controversial decision to have Monmouth Medical Center leave Long Branch, where the hospital stood for more than a century. This area's congressman, Rep. Frank Pallone (D-NJ6), zealously fought RWJBarnabas on this, saying they were stripping healthcare from a poor community.
His lobbying resulted in the NJ Dept. of Health requiring RWJBarnabas Health to still offer some acute-care hospital services in Long Branch for at least 10 years after Monmouth Medical Center relocates to Tinton Falls. The state of New Jersey is also requiring RWJ to keep an ER and surgery operating rooms in Long Branch indefinitely, for things such as emergency surgery, car accidents and gunshot wounds.
However, RWJ will slash the size of the existing Monmouth Medical Center campus in Long Branch by 65 percent. MMC is currently one million square feet, and RWJ plans to tear down buildings and reduce it to 345,000 square feet.
(RWJBarnabas declined to say which buildings it plans to tear down, but it will most likely be the oldest buildings.)
Kids build mosaic for new cancer center lobby
This summer, more than 300 local elementary school students created a tile mosaic that will hang in the lobby of the new Tinton Falls cancer center. The mosaic is very large; it is two stories tall and made up of 68,165 individual glass tiles. It has an underwater ocean theme, connecting this area to the Atlantic Ocean just a few miles to the east.
