Lou Rivera, a resident of Seabrook, an Erickson Senior Living community in Tinton Falls, N.J., won first place for his digital artwork at the Monmouth County Seniors Art Show. As a first-place winner, his artwork will be entered into the state competition. This is his fourth first-place win for digital art.

The piece is titled Superstorm Sandy. Rivera uses an Apple iPad Mini and an app called SketchBook to create digital artwork that he can easily take on the go, which fits well with his active lifestyle. He and his wife, Margot, enjoy traveling as well as clubs and activities at Seabrook, where they have lived for 17 years.

Rivera has exhibited his work at the Seabright Life Saving Museum, Monmouth Arts in Red Bank, the Brielle Public Library, and a gallery in Atlantic Highlands, where he sold about three dozen watercolors.

Rivera is currently working on a mixed-media painting of the Jersey Shore. He began painting watercolors nearly 20 years ago as a creative outlet after retiring from the Navy.

Thanks to Seabrook's maintenance-free lifestyle, many residents find they have more time to pursue hobbies and passions after moving to the community.
