Off-Duty Long Branch Firefighter Saves 2 Women In Ocean

At 5:27 p.m. Wednesday, the Long Branch Fire Department received a call of two swimmers in distress at West End Beach:

LONG BRANCH, NJ — In the week after Labor Day — where multiple people have drowned off the Jersey Shore — two female swimmers were rescued by an off-duty Long Branch firefighter Wednesday evening.

At 5:27 p.m. Wednesday, the Long Branch Fire Department received a call of swimmers in distress at West End Beach in Long Branch.

Off-duty Fire Lieutenant Tim Phillips heard the radio call and was first on the scene, said Long Branch Public Safety Director William Broughton.

Lieutenant Phillips immediately entered the water and assisted two female swimmers to shore. On-duty Fire Fighter Tyler Schick and two Long Branch Lifeguards also entered the water to assist the swimmers. All parties were returned safely to shore and no medical attention was needed.
