Eatontown Amazon Fresh Opening At Former Toys 'R' Us On Rt. 35

EATONTOWN, NJ — An Amazon Fresh grocery store is indeed still coming to Eatontown:

An Amazon Fresh will open on Rt. 35 in Eatontown sometime soon, an Amazon spokesperson confirmed to Patch this week.

They still have not confirmed an opening date.

"I asked and was told 'soon,'" Eatontown Mayor Anthony Talerico told Patch on Aug. 15.

It will open in what used to be the former Eatontown Toys R Us on Rt. 35, a space now vacant for several years.

A second Amazon Fresh is rumored to be opening at Holmdel Commons, but Amazon has not officially confirmed that yet.

The Eatontown location will be the second Amazon Fresh in the state: New Jersey's first Amazon Fresh opened July 14 in Paramus, where Amazon took over a 50,000-square-foot space previously occupied by Fairway Market on Rt. 17. However, the store was given negative reviews from NJ.com for being poorly stocked:

"They barely had anything in their bakery, only a small collection of meat cuts, and their seafood cases were not yet in use," wrote the journalist. "It was unclear whether the shelves were empty because of high customer demand — the store was busy, but by no means overrun — or because the store just wasn’t operating at full capacity yet."

Amazon is also planning to open a fourth Amazon Fresh at the former Kmart in Lodi, the Hasbrouck Heights Patch reported. An exact opening date has not been set yet.

All Amazon Fresh stores use "Just Walk Out technology," which is where many cameras on the ceiling scan shoppers' purchases and then their Amazon account is charged when they walk through a scanner at the door. There is no waiting in the checkout line.
