Eatontown Boy, 14, Wins U.S. Junior Chess Championship
Abhimanyu Mishra took home the big prize after competing alongside other top players under age 20 at the junior championship in St. Louis.
EATONTOWN, NJ — A 14-year-old Eatontown boy was crowned the winner of the U.S. Junior Chess Championship last month, qualifying him for the U.S. Championship in October, News12 reported Thursday.
Abhimanyu Mishra competed alongside other top players under age 20 at the junior championship, which took place July 15-25 at the Saint Louis Chess Club in St. Louis, Missouri, according to the U.S. Chess Champs website.
For his big win, Mishra was given a $12,000 prize plus a $10,000 scholarship to be used at the institution of his choice, the website said.

"Thanks a lot, [Saint Louis Chess Club] for the wonderful tournament !!," Mishra tweeted after his victory on July 24. "It is an honor to play in the world's best chess club. I am looking forward to US championship."
Mishra became the youngest player ever to earn the grandmaster title in June 2021 when he was 12 years old, according to a post by the St. Louis Chess Club, of which he is a member.
