Elaine Plasteras, 53, of Eatontown, passed away peacefully at her home on December 22, 2015, surrounded by her best friend and loving husband, Jimmy, her sons, J.T. and Loukas, and her step-daughter Erin Mickel and Erin’s husband Todd of Stamford, Connecticut.
Elaine was predeceased by her father John “Jack” Tyrrell, sister Nancy, and brother-in-law Victor Giglio. In addition to her husband and children, she is survived by a large and loving family which includes her mother Kathryn Tyrrell, nine siblings and their spouses; Maryanne and Fritz Barth, Susan and Mark Mittleman, Linda Giglio, Kathy and Alfred Perez, Denise Terrigno, Judy and Jim Louro, John and Sherry Tyrrell, Barbara Tyrrell and Missy Tyrrell as well as numerous nieces and nephews.
Born in Jersey City, New Jersey, Elaine was a graduate of the Freehold Public Schools. She worked at the Squires Pub restaurant in West Long Branch for many years, and for the past eighteen years she worked in the Accounting Department at Sferra Fine Linens in Edison.
Elaine spent countless hours volunteering for Challenged Youth Sports, a non-profit sports program for children and young adults with special needs, acting as the program’s bookkeeper. For three summers, she also ran The Marine Grill Beach Cafe in Sea Bright with her husband Jimmy. Some of Elaine’s most cherished memories were made during those summers; chatting with customers, passing out free popcorn for movie nights on the beach and working side-by-side with her family.
Of all the things Elaine did in her life, nothing gave her more joy than spending time with her family. She was a devoted mother and the most spirited cheerleader for Erin, J.T., and Loukas, both on the sidelines of their sporting events and in life. She loved long walks, listening to Bruce Springsteen, watching Seinfeld, and cheering for the Mets and Giants. She enjoyed spending summer days floating at the Louro’s pool and summer evenings with her family enjoying outdoor concerts at the beach or gathered around the fire pit in the family’s backyard. When the holidays came, she loved hosting family and friends at her home for the family’s annual Christmas party.
Elaine will be remembered for so much, including her infectious smile, unwavering optimism, unselfish giving spirit, and her ability to make everyone she spoke to feel like the most important person in the room. She will be deeply missed by her family, friends, and all who knew her. She heroically battled cancer in the same way that she lived every day of her life; with grace, strength, and unbelievable courage.
The family will be eternally grateful to Dr. Seth Cohen, MD, and his entire staff at Monmouth Oncology Hematology Associates, Dr. Michael Arvanitis, MD, and Elaine’s aunt, Marie O’Brien, RN, OCN for the extraordinary care, compassion, and comfort they provided to Elaine.
Friends and family are invited to attend a visitation from 3 p.m. to 7 p.m. on Sunday, Dec. 27 at O’Brien Funeral Home, 2028 Highway 35, Wall Township, New Jersey.
