We are glad to be hosting Hands Across the Sand for the 3rd
year in a row in Bradley Beach, who was the first town in New Jersey to pass a
resolution banning the use of seismic testing off their coast! Seismic airguns
are towed behind ships emitting
thunderous blasts of pressurized air to look for oil and gas deposits. Seismic airgun testing will
negatively impact marine wildlife and coastal ecosystems. According to the
Department of Interior, proposed seismic blasting could injure or kill 138,000
whales and dolphins, including the critically endangered North Atlantic right
whale.
More alarming is that seismic testing is the first major
step toward offshore drilling, which could further harm the marine environment
through leaks, oil spills and habitat destruction. Offshore drilling would also
threaten our coastal communities, tourist economies, and fisheries.
