Long Branch Cops Earn Awards For Actions After Fatal Shooting
Following a fatal shooting in a Long Branch restaurant in August, two officers prevented further loss of life, police said.

LONG BRANCH, N.J. — Two Long Branch officers will earn awards for preventing further violence following a fatal shooting Aug. 21, the LBPD announced Monday. Officer George Samol and Corporal Tracey Widdis will receive the Meritorious Service Award on Wednesday at the Monmouth and Ocean County Intelligence Bureau Valor Awards Luncheon.
The award stems from a fatal shooting in which Miguel L. Camara, 40, was charged with killing Marco Moreira and the attempted murder of Fernando Silva, officials said.

An individual on Broadway flagged down Samol after witnessing an altercation inside the Bom DMais restaurant, police said. Samol called for backup, drew his weapon and entered the building. He found an ongoing struggle between the suspect and a good samaritan over possession of a firearm, police said.
Samol upholstered his duty weapon and ordered Camara to drop the gun. As the 18 year old son of Fernanda Silva was able to gain control over Camara's gun, Camara immediately turned to Officer Samol and grabbed ahold of his duty weapon, trying to take possession of it, police said.

Samol was able to wrestle the gun from Camara as additional officers arrived on scene. Widdis was the first backup on the scene, helping Samol fend the suspect off, police said.
"The swift actions of these officers prevented any further injury or loss of life to the additional civilians in the restaurant at the time, including a few who were also being targeted by the suspect," according to the Long Branch Police Department.
"Their heroic actions, bravery and complete disregard for personal safety during this life-threatening incident speak volumes as to their integrity and ability as officers. Their professionalism is a true asset to the Long Branch Police Department."
