Monmouth Medical Center Presents Early July Community Health Education Programs

CONVERSATIONS WITH THE PHARMACIST – ANSWERS TO FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
Wednesday, July 1 at 1 p.m.
What’s the difference between brand and generic drugs? Should I get a vaccine? Are over the counter cold remedies effective? If you find yourself asking these questions, join Michelle Schork, PharmD, CGP, Emergency Medicine and Geriatrics at Monmouth Medical Center, to learn answers to these questions and more. OCEANFEST
Saturday, July 4 from 10 a.m. to 10 p.m.
Join Monmouth Medical Center, a corporate sponsor of Oceanfest, for one of the biggest Independence Day Celebrations at the shore! Stop by the Monmouth Medical Center Center for blood pressure screenings and giveaway. The Monmouth/Ocean Chapter of Safe Kids will also host a tent with games, prizes and safety information. The event will include entertainment, food, crafters, master sand sculpting exhibitions, a giant fireworks display, free giveaways and more. This event takes place on the promenade in Long Branch. CAMP JINKA
Monday through Friday from July 6 through July 24, 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.
Camp Jinka, a free summer day program offered in collaboration with the David S. Zocchi Brain Tumor Center at Monmouth Medical Center, has announced its open registration for summer 2015. This unique summer camp is offered to kids and teens whose lives have been impacted by a loved one’s diagnosis of a brain tumor. Children attending camp have a loved one who is battling a brain tumor or has passed away from one. The camp offers specialized indoor and outdoor camp activities to encourage expression and connections with others who share similar life experiences. Camp Jinka will take place at the Middletown Arts Center located at 36 Church Street in Middletown. Campers will have the choice of coming to individual weeks or all three. DIABETES SELF-MANAGEMENT SERIES
Mondays, July 6, 13, 20 and 27 from 5 to 7 p.m.

Fridays, July 24 & 21 from 9:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m.
Learn how to manage your diabetes by attending this four-session diabetes education program focusing on diet, nutrition, glucose monitoring, medications, meal plans, prevention and treatment of diabetes complications, dining out and benefits of exercise. The program is taught by a registered nurse and a registered dietitian/certified diabetes educator. It will be held at The Center for Diabetes Education at Monmouth Medical Center, located at 300 Second Avenue in Long Branch. For information and to register for classes, call 732-923-5025. MOTHER TO MOTHER SUPPORT GROUP
Mondays, July 6, 13, 20 & 27 from 11 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.
Once your baby arrives, join other new mothers to talk about what you are experiencing. Discussions will be led by a registered nurse on topics including infant behavior, feeding, sleeping patterns and crying, as well as recovering from childbirth. Newborns up to age 6 months and fathers are welcome. The program will be held at Monmouth Medical Center, located at 300 Second Avenue in Long Branch. GRANDPARENTS PROGRAM
Monday, July 6 from 7 to 9 p.m.
During this program, grandparents will have the opportunity to meet with a prenatal educator and discuss current trends in childbirth and infant care so they can help support their own children as they become parents. A tour of The Eisenberg Family Center is included. This program will be held at Monmouth Medical Center, located at 300 Second Avenue in Long Branch. GERD
Thursday, July 7 from 11:15 a.m. to noon
Commonly known as acid reflux, GERD is often associated with many gastrointestinal diseases and conditions. It can also be a symptom experienced from medications we take. The best way to manage GERD is through dietary, lifestyle and stress management techniques. This program will highlight those techniques. This program, for those ages 60 and older, will take place at the Keyport Senior Center, located at 110 Second Avenue in Keyport. Registration is required by calling 732-264-4916. Free.

HOW TO GET A GOOD NIGHT’S SLEEP
Wednesday, July 8 from 1 to 2 p.m.
For many adults, the experience of sleep changes as we age. To help get a better night’s sleep, join Sunil Kumar, MBBS, RPSGT, Polysomnographer at The Sleep Disorders Center at Monmouth Medical Center, to learn about age-related changes and how sleep-related disorders can be evaluated.
