Monmouth Medical Center Presents Early June Community Health Education Programs

EYE CARE AS WE AGE
Tuesday, June 2 from 11:30 a.m. to noon
Your eyes are the windows to the world, and as such they require care to ensure they function properly. This presentation will provide information on keeping your eyes healthy and how to recognize when to get an eye exam. This event, for ages 60 and older, will be hosted by the Keyport Senior Center and will take place at 100 Second Avenue in Keyport. Registration is required by calling 732-264-4916.
UNDERSTANDING YOUR OPTIONS FOR REHABILITATION
Tuesday, June 2 at 4 p.m.
It can be overwhelming to choose the right level of therapy for yourself or a loved one during a hospitalization for a stroke, fracture or other life-altering event. During this one-hour session, Jill Garaffa, OTR/L, HealthSouth Rehabilitation Hospital of Tinton Falls, will discuss all levels of therapy including home therapy, in-patient acute and sub-acute rehabilitation and out-patient rehab and prepare you to make the best decision on rehabilitation for yourself or a family member. This program will take place at HealthSouth Rehabilitation Hospital of Tinton Falls, 1st floor conference room, located at 2 Centre Plaza in Tinton Falls. STRATEGIES FOR HEALTHY AGING

While growing older offers challenges, it also provides rewards. To help attendees live happier and healthier lives, this program, co-sponsored by SCAN (Social Community Activities Network), will discuss how to maintain mental clarity and physical function, fall prevention, financial planning and memory loss. BREAST CANCER AWARENESS
Thursday, June 4 from 1 to 2 p.m.
Every woman should have an action plan for breast health. Although we don’t know how to prevent breast cancer, we do know that with early detection chance for successful treatment is greatest. This program, presented by the Jaqueline M. Wilentz Comprehensive Breast Center at Monmouth Medical Center, will discuss the importance of mammograms, screening guidelines for early detection and other recommendations for breast cancer awareness. FALL PREVENTION
Thursday, June 4 from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m.
Did you know that one in three older Americans falls each year? Falls are the leading cause of both fatal and nonfatal injuries for people ages 65 and older and can result in hip fractures, broken bones and head injuries. Even falls without major injury can cause you to become fearful or depressed, making it difficult to stay active. This program, co-sponsored by SCAN (Social Community Activities Network), takes place at the Freehold YMCA, located at 40 Center Street on the corner of Jackson and Center, and will discuss fall prevention techniques and what to do if you fall. CANCER SURVIVORSHIP DAY
Sunday, June 7 from 1 to 4 p.m.
National Cancer Survivors Day is an annual Celebration of Life. On this day, thousands of people will gather to show the world that there is life after a cancer diagnosis – and it’s something to celebrate. This celebration will feature light dinner and beverages, giveaways and door prizes as well as Lord & Taylor beauty mini makeovers and 107.1 The Breeze and Thunder 106.3 live on site. LIVING WITH ALZHEIMER’S DISEASE FOR THE CAREGIVER: LATE STAGE
Mondays, June 8 (Part I), June 15 (Part II) & June 22 (Part III) from 6 to 8 p.m.
This three-week program is designed for caregivers of people in the late stages of Alzheimer’s disease. This program will be held at Monmouth Medical Center, located at 300 Second Avenue in Long Branch. There is no fee for attending the program, however, pre-registration is required by calling the Alzheimer’s Association at 1-800-272-3900. Free.
STROKE AWARENESS
Wednesday, June 10 from 1 to 2 p.m.
The best way to protect yourself and loved ones from stroke is to understand personal risk and how to manage it. This program will inform attendees about the warning signs and symptoms of a stroke and how timing in getting medical treatment is crucial to saving lives. GERD
Thursday, June 11 from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m.
Commonly known as acid reflux, GERD is often associated with many gastrointestinal diseases and conditions. It can also be a symptom experienced from medications we take. The best way to manage GERD is through dietary, lifestyle and stress management techniques. This program will highlight those techniques. The program will take place at the Howell Senior Center, located at 251 Preventorium Drive in Howell. Registration is required in advance by calling 732-938-4500, ext. 2554. Free.
TINTON FALLS HEALTH FAIR
Friday, June 12 from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m.
This health fair, hosted by the Monmouth County Health Department and the Borough of Tinton Falls, will focus on healthy diets, obesity awareness and prevention, diabetes awareness, heart health and wellness for minority communities. There will also be free cardiovascular health assessments as well as blood pressure and Dermaview skin cancer screenings. Representatives from Monmouth Medical Diabetes Education and Cancer Services teams will also be on hand to provide helpful information. This program takes place at the Tinton Falls Borough Hall, located on Tinton Avenue. Free.
