Monmouth Medical Center Presents Early May Community Health Education Programs

DIABETES SELF-MANAGEMENT SERIES
Fridays, May 1, 8, 15 & 22 from 9:30 to 11:30 a.m.
Mondays, May 4, 11, 18 & June 1 from 5 to 7 p.m.
Learn how to manage your diabetes by attending this four-session diabetes education program focusing on diet, nutrition, glucose monitoring, medications, meal plans, prevention and treatment of diabetes complications, dining out and benefits of exercise. The program is taught by a registered nurse and a registered dietitian/certified diabetes educator. It will be held at The Center for Diabetes Education at Monmouth Medical Center, located at 300 Second Avenue in Long Branch. For information and to register for classes, call 732-923-5025. Program attendees will need a doctor’s prescription and will be billed to Medicare or your insurance carrier.

HABITS OF HAPPY PEOPLE
Friday, May 1 from 11 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.
Discover how you can develop habits that help happy people maintain positive thoughts, emotions and actions. Join Carol Palmer, BA, Monmouth Medical Center Program Instructor, to learn about the new science of happiness and how happiness improves our health, relationships and resilience to life’s ups and downs. This program, for those ages 60 and older, will take place at the Monmouth County Library – Eastern Branch located at Route 35 in Shrewsbury. MARCH OF DIMES 2015 JERSEY SHORE MARCH FOR BABIES
Sunday, May 3 – Registration begins at 10 a.m., walk begins at 11 a.m.
Each year, more than half a million babies are born prematurely and more than 120,000 babies are born with serious birth defects. This year, join the Monmouth Medical Center Team as they walk to support and promote healthy pregnancies and healthy babies. This event takes place on the Asbury Park boardwalk. LOOK GOOD, FEEL BETTER

This is a special program sponsored by the American Cancer Society for female cancer patients undergoing chemotherapy and radiation. Learn to cope with the side effects of treatment and feel comfortable with changes in your appearance by receiving a personal makeover by cosmetology professionals. This program will be held in Monmouth Medical Center’s Cancer Support Community Meeting Room, ST-007, located at 300 Second Avenue in Long Branch. May is National Stoke Awareness month. The best way to protect yourself and loved ones from stroke is to understand personal risk and how to manage it. Stop by the MMC Stroke Center table in the Lobby of Monmouth Medical Center, located at 300 Second Avenue in Long Branch, on May 5 or attend an informational seminar on May 6 at Hazlet Public Library, located at 251 Middle Road in Hazlet. UNDERSTANDING YOUR OPTIONS FOR REHABILITATION
Tuesday, May 5 at 4 p.m.
It can be overwhelming to choose the right level of therapy for yourself or a loved one during a hospitalization for a stroke, fracture or other life-altering event. During this one-hour session, Jill Garaffa, OTR/L, HealthSouth Rehabilitation Hospital of Tinton Falls, will discuss all levels of therapy including home therapy, in-patient acute and sub-acute rehabilitation and out-patient rehab and prepare you to make the best decision on rehabilitation for yourself or a family member. This program will take place at HealthSouth Rehabilitation Hospital of Tinton Falls, 1st floor conference room, located at 2 Centre Plaza in Tinton Falls. Chalnick, MD, Orthopaedic Surgeon and Medical Director of the Joint Replacement Center at Monmouth Medical Center, this session will help you learn what to expect before and after surgery, how to prepare yourself to achieve the best possible outcome and receive an overview of The Joint Replacement Center program. LIVING WELL WITH DIABETES

Millions of people in the U.S. have diabetes – many of them don’t even know that they have the disease. Although diabetes is a serious health problem, with proper care, it can be managed. Instructor Autumn Dempsey, RN, CDE will discuss how to recognize the signs and symptoms of diabetes and the important role that diet plays in controlling this disease. ASSISTING THOSE IN EMOTIONAL OR MENTAL HEALTH CRISES

This program, presented by Jim Romer, MA and Director of Monmouth Medical Center Crisis Services, will discuss how to recognize the signs and symptoms of emotional and mental health crises, how to take advantage of mental health services without stigma and how to get through overwhelming crisis situations. The Finn Family has pledged to use funds raised from their annual Finn Fest event to support the Joe Finn Music Therapy Program at the Leon Hess Cancer Center at Monmouth Medical Center.
