Monmouth Medical Center Presents Late July Community Health Education Programs

BIPOLAR DISORDER
Thursday, July 16 from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m.
Bipolar disorder, also called manic-depressive illness, is a serious mental illness characterized by dramatic mood swings, often with normal moods in between highs (mania) and lows (depression). Learn more about this complicated disorder and current treatment options. This program, for ages 60 and older, will take place at the Howell Senior Center, located at 251 Preventorium Road in Howell. Join team Monmouth Medical Center as the Colon Cancer Alliance and local partners in a 5K fundraising run/walk raise funds for local prevention efforts, research initiatives and patient support services of colorectal cancer. Help celebrate and create a supportive community for survivors of colorectal cancer and their families, caregivers and others impacted by this disease and encourage people to get screened for colorectal cancer. Participants are encouraged but not required to draw attention to their bottoms – and colorectal cancer – by running in their underwear. N.J. BARIATRIC AND METABOLIC INSTITUTE (NJBMI) AT MONMOUTH MEDICAL CENTER: NEW PATIENT WEIGHT LOSS SURGERY LECTURE
Thursday, July 23 from 6 to 7 p.m.
If you are 100 pounds or more overweight, you can’t afford to miss this physician-led educational lecture which will explain everything you need to know about weight-loss surgery. For those considering a bariatric procedure, this program, presented by Frank Borao, MD and Steven Binenbaum, MD, board-certified, laparoscopic-fellowship–trained surgeons, will offer the most up-to-date information on gastric bypass surgery, gastric banding and sleeve gastrectomy. Attendees are invited to join the monthly support group following the lecture. This program will be held at Monmouth Medical Center, located at 300 Second Avenue in Long Branch. Saturday, July 25 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.

Each year, more new cases of skin cancer are diagnosed than the combined incidence of cancers of the breast, prostate, lung and colon, according to the Skin Cancer Foundation. In fact, one in five Americans will develop skin cancer during the course of their lifetime. In an effort to raise awareness of the importance of skin cancer prevention and educate the public about its signs and symptoms, Monmouth Medical Center will provide free skin cancer screenings under a tent on the Great Lawn, on the Boardwalk in Long Branch, no appointment necessary. These screenings are sponsored by the Ocean Monmouth Health Alliance. Free.

SAFE SITTER
Saturday, July 25 from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Presented by certified Safe Sitter instructors, this program teaches 11- to 13-year-olds to be responsible, creative babysitters with special emphasis on how to handle emergencies. This course will be held at Monmouth Medical Center, located at 300 Second Avenue in Long Branch. To register, call 732-923-6992. $50 per child.

PEDIATRIC PRE-OPERATIVE TOURS

Tours are available for pediatric patients preparing to have a surgical procedure in the Cranmer Ambulatory Surgery Center at Monmouth. Tours are designed to reduce anxiety giving children a hands-on experience with medical equipment and visitation to areas they will encounter on the day of their surgery. Meet in the Pediatric Playroom of the Cranmer Ambulatory Surgery Center, located at 300 Second Avenue in Long Branch. Registration is required by calling 732-923-6525. Free.
