Rt. 36 Bridge In Long Branch Closed Starting Monday

LONG BRANCH, NJ — The Rt. 36 bridge over Troutmans Creek in Long Branch will be closed and detoured beginning Monday, Sept. 14, the NJ Dept. of Transportation announced Friday.

The heavily-used bridge will be closed through spring 2027, and the bridge will eventually be blown up.

The closure is necessary for the demolition and replacement of the bridge, said the DOT. This work is part of a $7.9 million federally funded project to replace the bridge. The existing bridge was built in 1941 and is in poor condition, said the NJ DOT.

The new bridge will have two twelve-foot-wide travel lanes, two eight-foot-wide shoulders, and two six foot-wide sidewalks, which is similar to the current bridge. The work is taking place off-season to avoid disruptions during the busy summer season and will use Accelerated Bridge Construction techniques to complete the work before Memorial Day 2027.

Beginning at 6 a.m. Sept. 14, the Rt. 36 bridge between Florence Avenue and Liberty Street will be closed.

The following detours will be in place:

Route 36 southbound Detour:

• Motorists on Ocean Boulevard/Route 36 southbound will be directed to turn right onto Atlantic Avenue/CR 29
• Turn left onto Branchport Avenue, back to Joline Avenue/Route 36

Route 36 northbound Detour:

• Motorists on Joline Avenue/Route 36 northbound will be directed to turn left onto Liberty Street
• Turn right onto Atlantic Avenue/CR 29, back to Ocean Boulevard/Route 36
