Saturday, January 4 -Feed the Turtles

You know what I would say to go and do today.  Go over to Manasquan Reservoir Environmental Center between  1PM-2PM and help a
Park System Naturalist feed the turtles. The Environmental Center is open,10am-4:30pm and is located at 331 Georgia Tavern Road in Howell. With all this snow, I would suggest you call ahead, 732-751-9453 .

The Manasquan Reservoir Environmental Center is just one of the many park and recreation areas, facilities, programs, and services of
Monmouth County Parks

It is dedicated to providing experiences of learning and discovery related to wetlands ecology and wildlife and habitat protection. Through interactive exhibits, multi-media presentations, educational activities for schools and community groups, and wildlife observation areas, visitors gain an understanding of the importance of water in our world.

Here is a picture of a wood turtle you may find at the Manasquan Reservoir. Wood turtles are a threatened species in  New Jersey. Historically found in Monmouth County, their largest populations are in Northern New Jersey. The wood turtle, unlike most of our native turtles, uses both aquatic and upland environments, which makes conservation efforts even more complex. Remote freshwater streams and rivers are used for mating, feeding, and hibernation and during summer the turtles move into surrounding woods and fields for foraging and egg laying. They are
generally omnivores. Wood turtles are aptly named and their carapace(top shell) is sculpted as if it were made from wood.
You are welcome to come and visit them at the environmental center daily from 10am to 4:30pm.
