Van Drew Presents Bill To Pay Coast Guard, FAA During Shutdown

Coast Guard, Federal Aviation Administration risk not receiving paychecks with the federal government shutdown in its third week.

The Coast Guard and Federal Aviation Administration regularly provide life preservers and smooth landings. With their paychecks in flux during the federal government shutdown, Congressman Jeff Van Drew proposed a bill that could give them the same.

Van Drew (D, N.J.-2) presented legislation Tuesday that would fund the Coast Guard and FAA during the shutdown. Training Center Cape May has the nation's fifth-largest Coast Guard base. The Coast Guard received payment Jan. 1 but risk not receiving compensation Tuesday.

“It is unacceptable for the men and women who protect us to be treated like second class citizens over partisan bickering," Van Drew said in a statement. "We need to re-open our government. This is shameful.”
