LONG VALLEY, NJ — Washington Township police reported two drunken driving arrests during proactive traffic enforcement over Memorial Day weekend, following separate motor vehicle stops in the township.
According to the Washington Township Police Department, officers were conducting traffic enforcement throughout the township during the holiday weekend when, in two separate stops, they determined the drivers were operating under the influence of alcohol. The stops took place on Fairmount Road and East Mill Road.
In the first incident, an officer stopped a vehicle on Fairmount Road for a traffic violation, according to the department. While speaking with the driver, the officer observed signs of impairment and determined the operator was under the influence of alcohol. Police identified the driver as a 50-year-old woman from Califon.
The woman was taken into custody, processed, and later released to a responsible adult in accordance with John's Law, according to the department.
In the second incident, an officer conducted a traffic stop on East Mill Road after observing a motor vehicle violation, according to the department. Following an on-scene investigation, the officer determined the driver, a 29-year-old Long Valley resident, was operating a vehicle while under the influence of alcohol.
That driver was also taken into custody, processed, and subsequently released to a responsible adult in accordance with John's Law, according to the department.
Police used the announcement to remind drivers to plan ahead before drinking. The Washington Township Police Department said motorists should make responsible decisions before getting behind the wheel and, if they plan on consuming alcohol, use a designated driver, rideshare service, or another safe transportation option.
