LONG VALLEY, NJ — Washington Township residents and visitors can now explore historic German Valley through a new self-guided walking tour launched by the Washington Township Historical Society as part of the area's 250th anniversary commemoration.
According to the historical society, the Self-Guided Walking Tour was launched "with the goal of attracting history enthusiasts, regional tourists, and day-trip visitors seeking commemorative experiences in New Jersey." The tour uses an interactive digital map that highlights historic properties that existed 250 years ago in German Valley
Visitors can use mobile devices to read written descriptions, view images, and hear audio narrations for each stop, according to the historical society. The society also said forthcoming written and audio materials are planned in Spanish and German.
The tour includes several locations tied to the township's early history. Stops listed by the historical society are the Jacob Weise House, Obadiah LaTourette Grist and Saw Mill, The Miller's House, The Old Fort (Philip Weise House), Neitzer Tavern, Early Village Building, Tunis Trimmer House, South Branch Raritan River Ford - Schooley's Mountain Road Crossing, Philip Weise House and Tannery Site, and The Old Union Church (Old Stone Church).
The online material also includes a "Timeline of Washington Township / German Valley 1730-1918." The historical society invites visitors to begin by viewing the interactive map provided with the tour.
The Washington Township Historical Society is also seeking public support for its preservation work. On the tour page, the group asks for donations and tells supporters, "Support us as we preserve and promote our heritage."
