LONG VALLEY, NJ — A local singer will be performing at Carnegie Hall, years after performing at West Morris Central High School, in what she's calling a "special, full-circle moment."

Soprano Chelsea Friedlander will be singing "Messiah" as a soprano soloist with The Masterwork Chorus & Orchestra in her Carnegie Hall debut in December.

The performance is especially meaningful to Friedlander, as she used to sing the same song every year when she was a student at West Morris Central High School under the direction of Dr. Vincent Rufino.

She calls those high school performances "the most formative musical work I did as a student," adding that "'Messiah' has remained one of the pieces closest to my heart."

"There is something incredibly special about returning to the music that first shaped you," Friedlander told Patch. "I sang Handel's Messiah every year while I was a student at West Morris Central, and those performances with Dr. Rufino are some of my most cherished musical memories. To now return to Messiah years later as a soprano soloist at Carnegie Hall feels almost surreal."

Since graduating, Friedlander has appeared in several operas, operettas, and musical theater shows across the country, making her professional stage debut in 2012. She also earned the prestigious position of singing with the US Army Choir, where she was praised for her "confidence and beautiful vocal color."

She calls the show "a beautiful reminder of how the experiences we have as young artists can stay with us and, sometimes, bring us full circle in ways we never could have imagined."

Friedlander will take the Carnegie Hall stage at 7:30 p.m. on Dec. 23, and tickets are available online here.

Those looking to catch the performance, but not the NYC commute, can see the "Messiah" performance at the Ridge Performing Arts Center in Basking Ridge on Dec. 20 at 3 p.m.
