Join us for an entertaining evening of revolutionary war history, music, food, wine and beer!

The Washington Township Historical Society (WTHS) invites the community to step back in time for a unique, lively history event, “1776 — The News of Independence Reaches German Valley,” an immersive experience on Saturday, June 13, commemorating the 250th anniversary of the nation’s founding.

What was it like to first hear the news of independence?

In July of 1776, word arrives from Philadelphia: the Declaration has been signed. In German Valley, neighbors gather at the historic Union Church as uncertainty—and urgency—fills the air.

Is it a cause for celebration… or concern? What will independence mean for family, livelihood, and future?

Step back 250 years for a fun, lively, and entertaining evening as news from Philadelphia reaches German Valley. Guests will have the opportunity to assume the roles of local residents — farmers, widows, soldiers, merchants, and others — and join in the conversations, questions, and uncertainty surrounding independence.

No costumes are required — just come ready to experience history in a whole new way.

  • Would independence be exciting… or frightening?
  • What risks would families face?
  • Would you support the cause?

“This program is designed to make history personal while creating a memorable and enjoyable evening for the community,” said John Reed, president of WTHS. “Participants won’t just hear history — they’ll experience the conversations, uncertainty, and excitement that ordinary people may have felt in 1776.”

The evening will feature:

  • Live authentic period music
  • Delicious appetizers with local cheeses, cold meats, veggies, fruit and more
  • Local wines, beer, cider and other beverages
  • An interactive atmosphere on the grounds of the 250-year-old Stone Church
